1. What is SBR rubber?
Styrene butadiene rubber, also known as SBR, is a synthetic elastomer derived from styrene and butadiene. SBR is also known as Buna® S (from Bayer's original trade name).
SBR consists of two monomers: styrene and butadiene. Generally, the ratio of styrene to butadiene is 3:1, although this can vary. Depending on the method of copolymerization of styrene and butadiene, there are two types:
E SBR (or SBR) = Emulsion SBR
S SBR = Solution SBR

2. Properties of SBR rubber
- Advantage:
- High abrasion resistance and mechanical strength;
- Has good heat resistance (-250C to 1000C) and chemical resistance;
- Rubber has good elasticity and impact absorption;
- Easy to process and mass produce, low production cost;
- Reasonable cost and good recyclability;
- Better water resistance than natural rubber;
- Withstands dilute acid and alkaline solutions;
- Good insulation;
- Disadvantange:
- At high temperatures, rubber has poor crack resistance and develops cracks rapidly;
- Weather resistance, Ozone, sunlight, poor aging;
- Low raw plasticity: short pre-treatment – difficult to fill mold
- High internal heat;
- SBR rubber has poor resistance to ozone, oxidation and weathering;
- Very poor oil resistance;
3. Applications of SBR rubber
Since SBR is one of the most cost-effective options when it comes to synthetic rubber, it is considered one of the most widely used materials in the world. SBR rubber is commonly found in gaskets, seals, and O-rings in plumbing and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. In addition, SBR rubber is also used in the following areas:
- Tires: SBR is a key component of many tires, especially car and truck tires, due to its elasticity, abrasion resistance, and heat resistance.
- Cushioning: SBR is used to manufacture cushioning products, including cushioning for furniture, bedding, floor upholstery and many other applications.
- Soundproof and heat insulation products: SBR has good soundproof and heat insulation properties, so it is used to manufacture soundproof and heat insulation products for applications such as acoustic, thermal and plumbing.
- Footwear and sports: SBR is used to manufacture shoe soles, sliding surfaces for sports products, and impact-resistant products such as knee and elbow guards.
- Industrial Products: SBR is also used to make industrial products such as adhesives, pipes, covers, fenders and knitted fabrics.
- Construction: SBR is widely used as a waterproofing material in the construction industry. Used as part of waterproofing materials, SBR helps protect walls, floors, roofs and other surfaces from water and moisture penetration.
