PU RUBBER (POLYURETHANE)

PU RUBBER (POLYURETHANE)

1. What Is PU Rubber?

PU rubber (Polyurethane), also known as Polyurethane Rubber or Polyurethane Elastomer, is a synthetic polymer material that combines the elasticity of rubber with the mechanical strength of engineering plastics. This material is known for its excellent abrasion resistance, load-bearing capacity, tear resistance, and impact resistance, making it widely used in various industrial applications.

Polyurethane was first developed in 1937 by German chemist Otto Bayer and his colleagues. Through continuous research and development, PU has become an important group of materials used in manufacturing machinery components, industrial equipment, automotive parts, mining equipment, and many other applications.

Unlike natural rubber or conventional synthetic rubbers such as NBR, EPDM, and CR, PU belongs to a group of polymers containing urethane linkages within their molecular structure. By adjusting the raw material composition and manufacturing formulation, polyurethane can be produced in various forms, ranging from soft and elastic materials to rigid materials.

In the industrial rubber sector, PU is commonly used in the form of Polyurethane Elastomer, which is suitable for manufacturing products such as rollers, wheels, PU sheets, sealing gaskets, shock-absorbing pads, and wear-resistant components.

Chemical Structure and Composition of PU

Polyurethane is primarily formed through an addition reaction between compounds containing isocyanate groups (–NCO) and compounds containing hydroxyl groups (–OH), creating characteristic urethane linkages.

The chemical structure of a urethane linkage is:

For industrial polyurethane elastomers, the raw material system generally consists of three main components:

  • Polyol: A compound containing multiple hydroxyl groups (–OH), typically polyether polyols or polyester polyols. Polyols contribute to the formation of soft segments within the polymer structure, influencing elasticity, flexibility, and low-temperature performance.
  • Diisocyanate: A compound containing two isocyanate groups (–NCO), commonly including MDI (Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate) or TDI (Toluene Diisocyanate). This component participates in the formation of urethane linkages and contributes to the material's structure, hardness, and mechanical strength.
  • Chain Extender: Usually a low-molecular-weight compound such as 1,4-butanediol (BDO), which helps extend polymer chains and form hard segments, thereby adjusting the mechanical properties of PU.

For a simple linear polyurethane system formed from diols and diisocyanates, the reaction can be represented as follows:

Here, R and R′ represent organic groups derived from diisocyanates and diols, respectively. This is a general structural representation rather than a fixed molecular formula applicable to all types of PU.

The structure of polyurethane elastomers consists of two main types of segments:

  • Soft Segments: Primarily derived from long-chain polyols, providing flexibility and elasticity.
  • Hard Segments: Formed from diisocyanates and chain extenders, contributing to hardness, tensile strength, and load-bearing capacity.

The distribution and interaction between soft and hard segments create the characteristic mechanical properties of PU. By modifying the proportions and composition of raw materials, manufacturers can adjust hardness, elasticity, abrasion resistance, and other properties to meet specific application requirements.

Common Types of Polyurethane Elastomers

Based on the polyol composition, polyurethane elastomers are generally classified into two main groups:

Polyether-Based Polyurethane

Polyether-based PU offers better hydrolysis resistance than many conventional polyester-based PU systems while maintaining good flexibility under low-temperature conditions. This material is suitable for applications involving high humidity, frequent water exposure, or requirements for elasticity.

Polyester-Based Polyurethane

Polyester-based PU generally provides good mechanical strength, abrasion resistance, and tear resistance. Certain formulations also exhibit suitable resistance to oils and solvents for industrial applications. However, this material may undergo hydrolysis when exposed to water for extended periods, particularly at elevated temperatures.

In addition, based on processing methods, polyurethane elastomers can be classified into Cast Polyurethane and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU). Each type has its own manufacturing characteristics and application range.

2. Properties of PU Rubber

PU rubber is widely used in industrial applications due to its combination of mechanical strength, elasticity, and abrasion resistance. Some of its outstanding properties include:

  • Abrasion Resistance: PU exhibits excellent abrasion resistance under various conditions involving friction and contact with abrasive materials. This is one of its most significant advantages, making it a preferred material for manufacturing rollers, wheels, wear-resistant sheets, conveyor belt scrapers, and components subjected to continuous friction.
  • Tensile Strength and Tear Resistance: Many PU formulations offer high tensile strength and tear resistance, helping minimize damage when exposed to tensile forces, compression, or impact during operation.
  • Load-Bearing Capacity: Thanks to its combination of hardness and elasticity, PU can withstand heavy loads in appropriately designed applications. It is commonly used for industrial wheels, heavy-duty rollers, support pads, and machinery components subjected to pressure.
  • Elasticity and Shock Absorption: PU can undergo elastic deformation under external forces and recover its shape once the load is removed. This property helps reduce impacts, vibrations, and noise during machinery operation. The degree of recovery depends on the material formulation and loading conditions.
  • Wide Range of Hardness: PU can be manufactured with various hardness levels, ranging from soft, rubber-like materials to rigid materials similar to engineering plastics. This versatility makes it suitable for different requirements involving load-bearing capacity, friction, and deformation.
  • Oil and Chemical Resistance: Many types of PU offer resistance to grease, mineral oils, and certain industrial chemicals. However, chemical resistance depends on the PU composition, chemical type, concentration, temperature, and exposure duration.
  • Temperature Resistance: Conventional industrial polyurethane elastomers typically operate within a temperature range of -30°C to 80°C. Some specialized formulations can function outside this range. Actual temperature resistance must be evaluated based on load, operating duration, and environmental conditions.

Limitations of PU Rubber

Despite its advantages in durability and abrasion resistance, PU also has certain limitations that should be considered:

  • The continuous operating temperature resistance of conventional PU grades is generally lower than that of certain specialized heat-resistant rubbers.
  • Some types of PU, particularly polyester-based polyurethane, may undergo hydrolysis when exposed to hot water, steam, or high-humidity environments at elevated temperatures for extended periods.
  • PU may swell or experience property degradation when exposed to certain strong solvents, acids, or alkalis, depending on its composition.
  • Some aromatic isocyanate-based PU materials tend to yellow or undergo color changes when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light for extended periods. Outdoor aging resistance should be evaluated according to the specific formulation.
  • Selecting an unsuitable PU hardness or composition may result in deformation, heat buildup, or reduced service life under continuous dynamic loading.

Therefore, when selecting PU rubber for industrial applications, it is essential to consider the load requirements, operating temperature, exposure environment, and actual working conditions.

3. Applications of PU Rubber

Thanks to its abrasion resistance, load-bearing capacity, and excellent mechanical strength, PU rubber is widely used in various manufacturing industries and industrial machinery applications.

Applications in Conveyor and Material Handling Systems

PU is commonly used to manufacture conveyor rollers, guide wheels, roller coverings, conveyor belt scrapers, and components that come into direct contact with materials during transportation.

The abrasion resistance and load-bearing capacity of PU help these components maintain effective performance in environments involving continuous friction. In addition, the material's elasticity contributes to impact reduction, noise reduction, and protection of contact surfaces during operation.

PU products can be designed with different hardness levels, dimensions, and shapes to suit various machinery systems.

Applications in Mining and Material Screening Industries

In the mining, construction materials, and granular material processing industries, PU is used for components requiring abrasion and impact resistance.
