Gaskets and O-rings have similar functions of sealing air or liquid, and are both used to create a tight mating surface between two or more components. However, they are both designed for different purposes and have different shapes. Let’s explore the differences between Gaskets and O-rings to help you determine the best solution for your needs.
Gaskets, also known as flange gaskets, are flat sheets of material used to create a seal between two mating surfaces that are not perfectly flat, usually with a bolted joint. Gaskets are typically circular in shape, but are manufactured in a variety of shapes depending on the application and can also be made from other polymers and hard metals. They can be coated with a variety of coatings to work best for different applications.
O-rings are rings with a circular cross-section, placed in a groove to create a seal between two parts. The thickness of O-rings can be customized to suit individual specifications. O-rings are usually made of elastic materials such as rubber, unlike gaskets which can be made of metal.
O-rings maintain a tight seal even when there is movement between two surfaces, while Gaskets are not as effective.

3. Choose the best type for your application
To decide whether Gaskets or O-rings are right for your application, consider the environment and function of the gasket.
O-rings are difficult to use when the joint is not round because of its round shape. Gaskets, on the other hand, can be customized to almost any shape, allowing them to work for a wider range of applications.
The operating temperature of the equipment will determine the best material for the O-ring or Gasket. While both can withstand a wide range of temperatures, Gaskets are best for environments with extreme temperatures.
However, O-rings perform better than Gaskets in extremely high pressure applications. In fact, some good rubber oring gaskets can withstand pressures in excess of 5,000PSI. Even when exposed to high pressure, rubber oring gaskets will maintain their integrity while preventing liquid, gas or air from escaping from the respective components they are used in.
