CHLOROPRENE RUBBER (NEOPRENE® OR CR)

1. What is Chloroprene Rubber?

CR rubber is Chloroprene rubber, also known as Neoprene, a polymer of chloroprene. It is a polymer of 2-chlorobutadiene 1-3.

The main types include:

Neoprene W: high heat resistance, good resistance to compression deformation.

Neoprene WRT: low tensile and tear resistance, commonly used as an accelerator for vapor-film butyl rubber.

CR rubber is resistant to weather conditions, fire and many chemicals. Besides, CR rubber is characterized by good mechanical properties and a wide operating temperature range, widely used in many industries and fields.

2. Properties of CR rubber

  • Good air permeability and tear resistance;
  • Extremely good fire resistance;
  • Very good abrasion resistance;
  • High weather and ozone resistance;
  • Heavy load bearing;
  • Oil resistant;
  • However, chloroprene rubber is not resistant to:

    • Aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzene
    • Chlorinated hydrocarbons, such as trichloroethylene
    • Polar solvents such as acetone, esters and ketones
    • Petroleum fuel

3. CR rubber applications

CR rubber is used in chemical engineering for technical rubber products that require grease resistance, fire resistance or weather and ozone resistance.

In the automotive industry, this material is found in drive belts, hoses, seals and bearings (anti-vibration). Favorable properties such as fire resistance and good electrical insulation properties also make polychloroprene a popular material for window profiles, building components, coatings and cable sheathing.
