1. What is silicone rubber?
Silicone rubber is also known as Polydimethylsiloxane. It is a durable material with high heat resistance.
It consists of a backbone of alternating Silicon and Oxygen atoms (silicone-based polymer), and is bonded to other molecules including carbon and hydrogen.

2. Properties of silicone rubber
Silicone rubber has no unsaturated double bonds making it inert, resistant to environmental factors such as oxygen, ozone, sunlight.
Silicone rubber can withstand extreme temperatures from −65 to 315 °C while still maintaining its useful properties. Because of these properties and the ease of manufacturing and forming, silicone rubber can be found in a wide range of products, including electrical cable sheathing, automotive applications, outdoor products that are exposed to rain, sunlight, ozone, alkaline solvents, dilute acids, products used in cooking and food storage, apparel such as underwear, sportswear and footwear, electronic components, medical devices and implants, etc.
Silicone’s low toxicity is one of the advantages of choosing it as a safe material for food and medical applications. Since its approval by the FDA in 1979, household products made from silicone rubber are commonly found in cookware, kitchenware, and food containers. In the medical field, silicone is used in pacemakers, stents, respiratory masks, and feeding tubes, among many other uses.

Like any polymer, silicone is not perfect and has some disadvantages. Silicone rubber has poor abrasion resistance, fire resistance and poor gas permeability. Silicone rubber also has only average oil resistance, and can swell and lose shape when exposed to oil for a long time.
3. Silicone rubber applications
Silicone is one of the most commonly used rubbers. Its combination of durability, strength, and overall safety makes it extremely popular in the food and medical industries. Applications of silicone include:
